MEDWAY —
When Amanda Luizzi left New York City for the town of Medway, she said she went with the belief that the size of a town or city doesn't matter. A good education is the same, no matter how big the community is.
Now the new principal at Burke and Memorial Elementary schools, Luizzi, who lives in Franklin, said she plans to use her background at an inner-city school to adapt to the unique situation of Medway's two elementary schools.
"My entry plan is getting to know everything about the schools," said Luizzi, who started July 1.
"Talking with the kids and parents as much as you can, at times like dropoff and pickup, is important," she said. "I want to be visible and approachable."
Luizzi worked in New York City until 2009 as an assistant principal at an elementary school in East Harlem. She's also worked as a teacher and math coach for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Luizzi said she chose to get into administration after seeing leadership at her school make changes in the education system. While she loved teaching, she wanted to be part of making changes in education, she said.
"I had the opportunity to work with some really strong leaders. My goals changed there," she said.
At the town's elementary schools, Luizzi said she thinks she can bring more continuity and development to the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade curriculum and provide more professional development opportunities for colleagues. She's already working with other district administrators and has completed one grade 3 orientation, Luizzi said.
Luizzi is replacing Leigh Becker, who accepted a position in Westborough.
Luizzi said she wants to get to know the local system better before suggesting areas for improvement. After only one month, it's still too early to tell, she said.
"Part of this job is understanding what was in place before you got here, to applaud what's working, then find what needs to change," Luizzi said.
The most rewarding part of being a principal is when she gets to see a goal or plan that she had in mind develop into something substantial, she said. The best part of the job is when data on student performance improves and progress is seen, she said.
Superintendent Judith Evans said the district chose Luizzi after a rigorous interview process that included a parent community forum. Luizzi was picked for her math background, her master's degree in special education and ability to help teachers work with challenged learners, and her proven track record of success with students, Evans said.
"She has been a great addition to the administrative team thus far, and we are all looking forward to a great start to the school year with her as the new leader at Burke/Memorial," Evans said.
